Sourced based essay

Wildfires is a natural disaster that can happen naturally or by human influence. These fires usually occur in areas like the forest. Many of these wildfires happen in the United States and Canada. Since these fires are uncontrollable, it is always difficult to simmer them down. Wildfires spread fast due to the existence of oxygen and fuel when a spark of fire is present. Wildfires only lead to the destruction of land and the homes of animals and people that live near these areas. Which is why it’s crucial to put a end to these wildfires that have been occurring very often in the past few years. It only leads to more toxic gases being released in the atmosphere and air pollution. Many people are dedicated to make people become more informed of how momentous these wildfires are. In both articles “Driving forces of global wildfires over the past millennium and the forthcoming century”  by O. Pechony and D.T. Shindell and “Observed impacts of anthropogenic climate change on wildfire in California” by A. Park Willams illustrates how wildfires that occurred in the past few years will effect the future. The newspaper article by Blacki Migllozzi  titled “Record Wildfires on the west coast are calling a disastrous decade” shows how wildfires this year especially have worsen bringing more concern to the climate. While in this article “Observed impacts of anthropogenic climate change on wildfire in California”  by Aurélie Terrier mainly focuses on the wildfires in California.

In article “Driving forces of global wildfires over the past millennium and the forthcoming century” published by O. Pechony and D.T. Shindell elucidates how wildfires will effect the climate negatively and the environment for years to come. It has been known that wildfires effect the climate by producing gases that will be released in the atmosphere causing the production of heat causing the earth to become warm making temperatures rise. They start off the article with “Recent bursts in the incidence of large wildfires worldwide has raised concerns about the influence climate change and humans might have on future fire activity.” Already I was able to identify what the article will be based on. Throughout this piece Pechony and Shindell provides information and data to support their beliefs in the futures climate due to these wildfires. Some of these sources came from NASA’s modeling and analysis program and applied program and Dr. Jennifer Marlon who specializes in the studies of wildfires and climate change. With the sources being used the author was able to support their reasonings. This article tone was alerting and informative. In this line “ There is a need for comprehensive knowledge of worldwide anthropogenic fire management history, especially in the industrial period, to better resolve the role of humans in past fire activity, and more reliably assess their impact on future biomass burning.” They don’t hold back on why we would be informative about these wildfires. This allows the writing to be believable in a sense of seriousness. Also this article shows the audience is directed to  people especially living in the United States currently  since these wildfires are happening there frequently. The purpose of this article was to provide a prediction of the future of the earths climate and how badly it will be effected due to these wildfires if they keep happening.

Scientist always take information from the past and present to make a prediction that can possibly occur in the future.Even writer Aurélle Terrier also makes a prediction in the article “Potential changes in forest composition could reduce impacts of climate change on boreal wildfires”. Although wildfires are already effecting the environment, the changes of the biotic components of forests can decrease  climate change from effecting wildfires in the future.Terrier says “As deciduous species are less flammable than conifer species, it is reasonable to believe that a potential expansion of deciduous species in boreal forest, either occurring naturally or through landscape management, could oddest some of the impacts of climate change on the occurrence of boreal wildfires.” By also using data to support her reasoning it allowed her writing to be convincing. Although these predictions may not happen, it still gives you a basic idea of how wildfires can effect our upcoming years.  This article is targeted to everyone since it shows how we all will may be effected in the near future. But I feel as if  this article is mainly targeted to my generation(generation z) since we are the future and can change it. Which is why this article purpose is to inform the reader on the effects these wildfires will have on the environment and what factors can impact this natural disaster as well.

The western part of the United States has been experiencing drastic changes to its environment. Places like California, Oregon, and Washington have been facing many wildfires. Especially this year the fires have been more bigger and difficult to stop. Making it hard for the people who live in these areas and the firefighters battling these devastating fires. In newspaper article “Record wildfires on the west coast are calling a disastrous decade” by  Blacki Migliozzi , forms the concern for these wildfires that have been happening and how dangerous they have been. The author uses sources from NASA’s satellites , these satellites are able to detect heat from the fire activity in the past year from places in California, Oregon, and Washington. They also included graphs of the air quality and climate. This helps support there reasonings into the dangers of wildfires. Lines “We’ve broken almost every record there is to break”, said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, referring to his home state, where catastrophic fires have become an almost-yearly occurrence.” and “Breathing in high concentrations of particulate pollution can worsen asthma and other respiratory problems in the shirt term, and can even lead to strokes or heart attacks.” Also helps support there claims by using relevant information from professionals that are focus their work on environmental science. Even the use of language Migliozzi uses brings a sense of commitment, by deeply using data from recent studies. The audience is most definitely pointed to the people living in these areas since they should be aware about what it going on in the area they live and how these fires will negatively effect them. By showing you what I mean in this line “Fires have become, more destructive over time, especially as people have moved further into fire-prone areas. A majority of the fires have destroyed the most buildings and structures have occurred in the past five years, according to a New York Times analysis of state data through the end of the last week. Five fires this year are among the most destructive on record.” Since more people have been moving near these areas it has caused a risk to their lives and homes. This article is both informative and persuasive because its whole purpose is to illuminate climate change specifically wildfires and how people can be more notified of the likelihood of being endangered.

Although multiple regions have been experiencing wildfires, California has been sadly experiencing far worse. Even though California experiences fire seasons as of year it has been the worse ever experienced. Over 2 million acres of land has been lost due to these wildfires. In article “Observed impacts of anthropogenic climate change on wildfire in California” written by A. Park Williams talks into the wildfires in California and how climate change is adding on to the destruction. William uses information taken from data since the 1970s on how the warming of the atmosphere has increased the production of wildfires. The author writes sentences “increased summer-forest-fire area ass very likely occurred due to increased atmospheric aridity causing by warming.” and  “Warming effects were also apparent in the fall by enhancing the odds that fuels are dry when string fall wing events occur. The ability of dry fuels to promote large fires is nonlinear, which has allowed warming to become increasingly impactful.” This evidence strongly supports the authors main idea in how climate change plays a role in these wildfires. They also include graphs of the burned areas in four different regions of California that experience wildfires. With that being said they were able inform the reader by using information from reliable sources. This also targets Californian living in these areas since they are dealing with the issues wildfires and climate change has brung to there climate and air quality. Making the article useful for it’s important information on the wildfires in California and what has been causing them to happen so frequently.

Essentially all four of these articles were able to present a effective agreement on the effectiveness wildfires has on our environment. From there use of sources specialized in this topic, they were able to back up there reasonings into their beliefs in either the effects wildfires have and what it exactly is. By making their  pieces of writing to be convincing and reasonable. Even including images and graphs based on data from years of research of the study of climate change  based on recent observations. When you are able to establish this your writing can be fully supported. Which is why these writers took the informative approach so that the audience can be more knowledgeable on wildfires. In conclusion these articles were able to bring a topic that they were able to discuss about.

Research report

For more than 100 years scientist have been studying the earths climate and different weather patterns. These studies lead to the understanding of how different things can effectively change the way our environment is.These studies also helps scientist learn how the earth may look like into the near future and how the events currently happen are the reason behind these beliefs. Climate change is one of the causes for the changes in our earths climate and temperature. This is due to the influence of humans continuing to burn fossil fuels that turn into greenhouse gases which get released into the atmosphere causing an increase in the earths temperature. Natural causes like ocean currents, volcanic eruptions, wildfires, and etc also play a role into the increase of climate change since these natural disasters can also cause different changes to the environment. Wildfires are a well known natural disaster that has been happening more often then before. These fires are always hard to fight since they spread so rapidly and are very dangerous. Even though they can happen without knowing, they are still caused mostly due to human actions. When these fires are done doing damage the smoke from the flames releases toxic gases into the air such as carbon monoxide, later to be found in the atmosphere. This increases the warming of the earths surface making the temperature rise. Even though wildfires negatively effects the earth, it still has a few benefits to the soil composition of the area where these wildfires occurred. Regardless we want these natural disasters to not happen so often because if they are still happening more and more we will be effected harshly by not only by the increase of the temperature but our health.

Although Wildfires can develop naturally, majority of these wildfires are due to human carelessness. These wildfires can can occur anywhere and are very difficult to extinguish.Weather conditions contributes to the natural aspect of wildfires occurring by a lighting striking or heat from the sun being erupted. But humans are to blame for about 90% of these wildfires to transpire. UnIntentionally leaving fires unintended like camp fires, getting rid of lit cigarettes, not getting rid of debris the right way, playing with fireworks and many other ways can risk a fire. For the past 20 years wildfires have been happening more frequently in our current decade then it has ever been. Writer Blacki Migoliozzi wrote a article based on the wildfires that have been occurring recently in the western part of the United States like in places in California, Washington, and Oregon. In the article it stated that “We’ve broken almost every record there is to break”, said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the university of California, Los Angeles, referring to his home state, where catastrophic fires have become an almost-yearly occurrence.” Almost 850,000 acres has been destroyed in the California due to these fires. Around this time California experiences dry seasons which is the yearly period when there isn’t enough of rainfall. These dry lands have a higher chance of catching on fire quickly increasing the risk of a wildfire to start. When fuel, oxygen, and heat is present, this can trigger a fire to happen. There has even been more people moving closer to these wildfire prone places in the past few years which has been leading more people in risk of danger.Natural disasters like wildfires lead to the increase of climate change making the earths global climate to increase from the heating of the earths crust.

Wildfires mainly has negatively effected the environment but still has a few positive effects to the environment. The aftermath of an wildfire can be devastating. Not only are acres of land destroyed but so are the homes for animals and humans living near or in those areas. When the smoke from the flames are released into the air, it causes carbon dioxide to be released due to the toxic gases the smoke carries. The smoke of the fires can cause health problems that are harmful to humans like deadly cancers like lung cancer. The CDC is a organization used to save life’s from various health threats and they do this by gaining information based on the environment. In one of their article they express “Smoke exposure increases respiratory and cardiovascular hospitalizations;emergency department visits; medication dispensations for asthma, bronchitis, chest pain, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(commonly known by its acronym, COPD), and respiratory infections; and medical visits for lung illnesses.” Diseases that can particularly effect the way you breathe can be long term based on by your age and health status. Additionally wildfires can result to a change in the water quality of rivers, lakes, and streams. Even though wildfires have a negative impact on our climate and health, it helps on the physical and chemical properties of the soil. The soil on the ground can be nurtured with nutrients due to the fire burning away the vegetation and and organic matter of the soil. The National Geographic article “The ecological benefits of fires” it discloses “Many ecosystems benefit from periodic fires, because they clear out dead organic material— and some plant and animal populations require the benefits fire brings to survive and reproduce.” This will help promote healthier soil so that it is easier for trees and plants to grow stronger and healthier. Wildfires heavily effects the environment and our health in a negative way, but it’s still beneficial to the future plants that can be grown in those areas.

Even though wildfires can happen without knowing we can still drop the amount of wildfires that have been happening far too often.Different states have been starting to act on different ways to prevent these fires by using protocols if these fires occur. It is very beneficial to know these protocols especially living near or in these areas. It should be essential to have different type of ways to decrease a wildfire from arising . One of the most important method is to be cautious. It’s important to make sure when being in these wildfire prone areas that you don’t leave a fire unattended or dispose flammable items like cigarettes or lighters, this will assure the safety of not only yourself but the environment around you. We know that human carelessness is why majority of these fires happen so people should be very cautious when living in these areas.Another way can be to make emergency plans, when you do this you will always be prepared for the worst. Also you should always report any kind of fire you see outside. It doesn’t matter how big or small because when a fire starts it will continually burn if its not put out. Also living in areas where wildfires are Hazardous should know how to prepare for one.By following evacuation orders and being safe people can lower the rate of wildfire happening.

Wildfires can be avoided if we actually cared to protect our environment. Our goal should be for a healthier earth so that we don’t be highly effected in the near future. The better we care for our environment the better it will be. One way we can do so is by not being so careless of what we do.90% of wildfires happen because of humans and we can stop this from happening. Just because they can appear naturally doesn’t mean we should add on it.These fires are unwanted and dangerous and shouldn’t be having so many times in the past few years. So much of land has already been lost and the homes for humans and animals living in or near these areas. Wildfires can damage our respiratory system which can lead to dangerous health problems. Therefore wildfires should be taken into consideration and should be stopped immediately because it’s only hurting our earth drastically.

Self reflection

Throughout this semester we were assigned several different writing assignments that went with the theme of climate change. Some having to do with what you know about it and others about your experience with it. The first writing piece we had to do was the sourced based essay. At first it was a challenge to me since I wasn’t familiar with writing a paper with a rhetorical situation. After writing several drafts and doing peer editing I felt more confident that my paper would be better. But I was wrong, I didn’t do as well as I thought I would. At first I was angry since it took a while to write but I realized that I shouldn’t give up. That assignment was a wake up call and made me want to do better. After that assignment came the research paper which was my favorite assignment. We were able to write about our subtopic and connect it with our main topic. My group topic was air pollution and my topic was based on wildfires. I didn’t know much about wildfires and knew that I needed to find different sources to back up my claims. I really enjoyed this assignment and I felt like I had enough time to correct and do my work. The assignment I felt was different but good at the same time was the personal narrative. It’s different from the other assignments because you were able to write a personal experience you had. This assignment allowed me to see how much I matured over the years and how well I was able to tell that story. After all these assignments I got to improve my writing and see that you’re first draft doesn’t have to be perfect.
As I compare my writing from the beginning of the semester to now I see a huge difference. I think this was due to the several forums we did on discussion board and the peer editing assignments. We were presented with a new forum each week on blackboard that always related to our assignments for the week. Also this was a good way for me and my classmates to communicate since we weren’t able to due to being online. It made me feel like I was having a actual conversation face to face with my peers because we would discuss each other’s work and give advice. This was a good way to communicate and helped with the assignments we did this semester. For our first assignment we wrote a sourced based essay, I wasn’t quite familiar with writing a rhetorical situation since it has so many elements to it. But the forums helped with this because I was able to see how to properly write that assignment and get feedback. Even though that essay was quite difficult, I was still able to reflect on the mistakes I have made so that they won’t get repeated. The peer editing assignments also helped with my writing because it helped with grammatical errors I didn’t realize I was making. In assignments like the climate change narrative and the research report, I was able to improve my writing by getting someone else to edit my grammar. Essentially for the research report I was more confident about my writing after getting feedback from my partner because they pointed out things I didn’t even notice in my writing. After finalizing that assignment , that’s when I realized my writing skills improved because I noticed changes in the wording after comparing it to my sourced based essay. For the climate change narrative I felt like I was able to tell my story better due to hearing other people’s stories . I was a little nervous to share my story on how I thought climate change was a hoax because I thought people would assume I was ignorant. But after hearing my partners story I realized the similarities between our experience with climate change. This was also a way for me to see how much I matured over the years because I have a whole different opinion on climate change now and never thought I would even think that way. Throughout this semester I was exposed to different assignments that helped me grow as a writer.
As the semester comes to a end, I’ve had improved so much In my writing. One thing I will never take for granted is feedback from others. Personally I never really felt that it was helpful until I started this class. It made me see that it was necessary to hear others opinions because that’s what helped me write better. Not only does this help with your writing but help give others advice as well. I feel like it’s great to stop someone else from doing a mistake you have done before. Also I was able to learn new writing techniques to help with writing my claims, introductions, and outlines. Even though I improved in my writing, there is still more space for improvement. As I continue my college years I will use the things I learned in this class whenever I have writing assignments. I will also continue to allow myself to grow and continue to use the advice given to me. In conclusion after all of these assignments, I was able to expand my writing abilities and become more knowledgeable about writing.

Climate change narrative

Climate change is one of the most important challenges we are facing in our day of age. Climate change has been a ongoing thing that has been happening since the early 19th century but was brought into conversation about 30 years ago. The result of climate change has been drastic changes to the temperature, weather patterns, and more natural disasters occurring. This is due to human emitting greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels for things like transportation, electricity, and heat. We see this happening mostly in places like China,India, Canada, and the United States. Here in New York we see a lot of different type of transportations used everyday. Imagine the amount of CO2 gases that has been produced these past few years. This contribution to climate change just leads to more greenhouse gases to be produced and released into the air. Dr. Wallace S. Broecker aka “the grandfather of climate science” was a famous geochemist who helped popularized the term ‘global warming’ in the 1970s by a paper he wrote and his concern toward this topic. He mainly focused on the earths oceans and seas by dedicating research to the study of its history and structure. He was later able to develop a system to support his theory of changes in ocean currents due to climate change. Just from this one scientist it seems as if the problems of climate change can be solved by scientists alone since they are behind all of these theories, when in reality that isn’t the case. Humans are the ones that should bring change, we can change our habits and change to earth friendly things. Although climate change can’t be changed in one day the more we do the better. Even myself I didn’t believe that climate change was real until I was more educated on the topic. It made me change the things I do daily so that I can help make the earth a better place. Broecker warned us about climate change for years and described climate change as a “angry beast” and that we are only “poking at it with sticks.” As climate change worsens we can inhibit things into our daily life to reduce the increase of greenhouse gases in the air.

When I first heard of climate change I believed that it was a hoax. Maybe I was too young to understand or I was just being arrogant, when in reality I was fearful of how our future will end up. In 2015 that’s when I realized this wasn’t something to think lightly about. That year alone was recorded as the hottest year our earth ever experienced.Around that time I was watching the news more since I wanted to understand what was going on around the world. One day I noticed that they were talking about climate change. At first I was confused because I didn’t think that it was a big deal since it’s not happening in my area. But I finally started to do research and stumbled on a documentary named “Chasing Ice.” This was a documentary based on the glaciers that have been melting rapidly around the world . James Balog who is a photographer and his team are behind this film and travelled around the world to witness these glaciers. They were able to capture several videos and images to show how fast these landscapes were changing. The part of the film that made me realize that climate change was real was when they were in Greenland. They went to the Jakob shaven glacier which is the largest outlet glacier of west Greenland. It scared and shocked me to see how fast the ice was melting due to the rise in temperatures. Not only does the melting of these ice glaciers produces CO2 but increases the sea levels since the water will eventually run into the ocean. Although I couldn’t relate to the people living in that area, seeing it happen with my own eyes made me imagine how people are living in these Unsafe conditions. After finishing that film I knew I had to do something. I ended up researching several ways I can reduce climate change.I started to decrease the amount of water I used because this will help reduce carbon pollution, not wasting food, using LED lightbulbs around the house, and pulling plugs when they aren’t being used. With just these few changes I was able to contribute to the prevention of climate change and eventually I will be able to do bigger changes like use solar energy. Although it may seem like it is too late to stop climate change since our global temperatures are already high, we can still avoid and limit the worse effects of climate change.

If we were to change certain things in our daily routine it can help reduce climate change. As the years went by climate change worsen and humans are to blame. I believe that if we can bring more awareness to this topic more people would contribute to the cause. There are many people who believe that climate change isn’t happening when that is completely false. I was able to gain knowledge on climate change and hopefully I can spread this information to others. Also I believe if more people visually saw how climate change is changing the earth, people would be concerned about our environment. Even though it may seem like climate change has done a lot of damage we can still revert the things we done. In conclusion it’s not too late to change our ways for a healthier planet.
